GLB Newsletter for October, 2008

This is the season for elections, for the discussion of political subjects, the consideration of the
future and where we are heading. Right on time, the release of what could be a major element in
that environment, the futuristic novel "The Gay Gene Discovery" by Linda Sones Feinberg.
Scientists at NIH, in the year 2013, discover the gay gene and develop a test for that gene in
fetuses, by testing-amniocentesis. What happens then is wide-scale testing and wide-scale
abortions of fetuses with gay genes! This is understandable, considering what it means to an
individual to grow up gay or lesbian in our present society. But where would the Catholic church
fall in this controversy? The Vatican has its own chapter. Some familiar names (or close) become
involved on the basis of the abortion incidence and concern for the gay/lesbian history, and then,
about 2030, the confusion when teenagers find themselves attracted to their own gender even
though they are gay-gene-negative!
       It is better not to give the entire plot away, but the book points out forcefully how
important it is to consider these points now, before it actually happens; make some decisions
about where we want to stand if and when these things occur. These considerations will be
especially true when we enter the voting booth less than a month from now. Just yesterday, the
state of Connecticut joined two other states in finding same-sex marriage a logical personal right
for everyone. Which state is next? Where do you stand on that issue? We don't promise that this
